Endorsements

  • By grounding the Apocalypse squarely in the first century, approaching the prophecies through Old Testament lenses, and focusing heavily on application for the follower of Christ, Dave’s commentary is a welcomed breath of fresh air for any student of the Scriptures, whether it be a layperson or a pastor.

  • David Forsythe’s commentary on Revelation is an excellent bridge between the academic and the pastoral. The commentary is obviously aware of current scholarship on the Apocalypse but is aimed at the reader who wishes to see through the popular hype regarding the end times.

  • Finally, an honest approach to the importance of scriptural context in understanding the book of Revelation. The oracle of judgment from Jesus in Matthew 23 is given its place of importance as the last prophecy concerning Israel and for which the early church waited and anticipated to be fulfilled in a generation of time.

Description

Many readers approach Revelation looking for either headlines or timelines, but this commentary takes a different route. It reads the book as a deeply pastoral letter to real first-century churches, saturated with Old Testament imagery and aimed at strengthening Christians under pressure rather than predicting modern news cycles. The emphasis throughout is on letting Scripture interpret Scripture—especially drawing on the prophets—to make sense of John’s visions in their original covenantal and historical setting, and then carrying those insights forward into the life of the church today.

What makes this work especially accessible is its balance between careful exegesis and real-world application. It doesn’t get lost in technical debates for their own sake, but it also doesn’t flatten Revelation into vague spirituality. Instead, it steadily builds a coherent reading of the text that highlights the kingship of Christ, the certainty of God’s judgment and vindication, and the call for believers to persevere with hope and courage. The result is a guide that works just as well in the study as it does in the pulpit, helping readers see Revelation not as a riddle to decode, but as a message meant to shape how Christians live.

In this book you will find:

  • A verse-by-verse commentary on Revelation
  • A first-century historical and literary framework
  • Emphasis on Old Testament prophetic background
  • Attention to the significance of AD 70 in context
  • Christ-centered interpretation of apocalyptic imagery
  • Pastoral application for the life of the church
  • Encouragement for endurance, hope, and faithfulness
