Where do Baptists come from?
This work addresses the idea known as Baptist “successionism,” the claim that Baptists can trace an unbroken line of churches back through medieval and ancient groups all the way to the New Testament. The author notes that while this view has been widely circulated in some circles, it has not been seriously defended in a sustained, documented study.
In response, the book offers a careful, research-based critique of successionism and argues for a historically grounded understanding of Baptist origins as a Protestant movement arising from the Reformation era. Rather than relying on assumed historical links, it examines the evidence and seeks to present a clearer account of where Baptists actually come from and how they should understand their place in church history.
The volume also reflects the author’s broader aim of providing Baptists with a thoughtful and accessible resource on a topic that has often been treated in passing or left unaddressed in scholarly form. It is intended to encourage a more accurate reading of history and a better appreciation of Baptist identity within the wider Protestant tradition.
