Endorsements

  • Growing up in the Baptist South, we always spoke of revival in terms of meetings placed on the church schedule in the spring and fall. Once I began to wrestle with the doctrines of grace, one of my immediate questions was, “How does revival square with theology built upon the meticulous sovereignty of God?” Here, Tom Nettles shows that Reformation theology has always undergirded genuine revival, a reality shown to be true in America, where revivalism replaced revival and largely went to Arminian seed after the rise of Charles Finney.

  • America has a rich heritage of revival(s). In this survey of American awakenings, Tom Nettles traces the course of revival in America from the post-Reformation era to the Great Awakening, and from the 1858 revival in New York to the revivals of the twentieth century.

Description

This book offers a thoughtful survey of revival in American history. Across twelve chapters, the author examines key periods and figures that shaped revivalism and spiritual awakening, inviting readers to reflect on what genuine God-sent revival looks like in practice.

Rather than offering simplistic judgments or fixed conclusions about historical movements and their leaders, the work provides carefully balanced analysis intended to encourage discernment. Attention is given to the relationship between doctrine, zeal, prayer, preaching, spiritual experience, and the challenge of recognizing authentic work of the Holy Spirit.

The result is a historical and theological exploration that presses readers to think more carefully about revival, its marks, and its effects in the life of the church and our Nation.

Inside this book, you’ll find:

  • A survey of American revival history
  • Exploration of conversion, holiness, and spiritual fruit
  • Discussion of doctrine, zeal, prayer, and preaching in revival
  • Reflection on discerning true works of the Holy Spirit
  • Balanced engagement with revival movements and figures
  • Encouragement toward thoughtful theological discernment

This is a helpful guide for readers who want to understand revival more deeply and think more carefully about how God works in history and in His church today.
