Endorsements

  • Tom Ascol has given us an insightful template for protecting the Gospel from erosion as it’s conveyed and also from evasion as it’s considered. The Gospel must not be diluted by the preacher; nor should the hearer be distracted when he considers its offer.

  • We all, as pastors, as well as laymen, struggle in these things. As a reformed Baptist pastor, I have been guilty of being condescending to those who disagree, even becoming argumentative.

Description

How should pastors pursue faithfulness in a local church without drifting into either rigidity or compromise? This small but important booklet by Tom Ascol addresses that tension with clarity aimed directly at gospel ministers who are serious about biblical reform.

At the heart of the discussion is a question every pastor eventually faces: how to remain faithful to Scripture while wisely engaging differences in conscience, conviction, and maturity within the church. Ascol warns against two common errors—narrow exclusivism driven by fear of compromise, and an overly broad openness shaped by the desire to accommodate at any cost. Both, he argues, move away from the balanced path Scripture requires.

Instead, this booklet calls pastors back to a biblically grounded approach that holds conviction and charity together. It encourages careful thinking about conscience, liberty, and pastoral responsibility, especially in settings where disagreement is unavoidable. Written for pastors, elders, and serious church leaders, this booklet is a concise guide for anyone seeking to pursue reform without losing gospel clarity or pastoral wisdom in the process.
